IVE EMPATHY: A New Sound Laced With Familiarity

Almost a year after the release of IVE Switch, IVE makes a comeback with IVE EMPATHY: an album showcasing the group's diversity. Before the album was officially released, IVE promoted the song "REBEL HEART," which quickly became a hit, earning multiple music show wins. Listening to the track, it's not hard to see why.

"REBEL HEART" is an anthem for the misunderstood: creating a message of hope for those who feel like they don't fit in or are accepted by society. By combining a meaningful song with a vibrant performance, IVE set the standards high for K-Pop in 2025. More importantly, it raised even more anticipation for the release of the whole album.

When IVE EMPATHY was finally released, it lived up to and surpassed expectations. Even just looking at the track list, it is refreshing to see a K-Pop album with all but one song lasting over three minutes.

While "REBEL HEART" had a message of hope, the teasers and release of the main single, "ATTITUDE," cements one truth: you can always expect the unexpected from IVE. It might not be as mainstream as the pre-release, but "ATTITUDE" holds the perfect place as a title track. The song highlights some of the major strengths and characteristics of IVE more so than previous songs, whether it is Wonyoung's "Lucky Vicky" attitude or Gaeul’s lengthy time under the spotlight. The high notes in the pre-chorus from Leeseo and Liz also add different layers of light and shade to the track. “ATTITUDE”’s sampling of Suzanne Vega's “Tom's Diner” will also be a nostalgic touch for many listeners.

Sampling is also evident in "You Wanna Cry", which uses the unmissable tune of "I Wanna Dance With Somebody" by Whitney Houston, enforcing a sense of familiarity while giving it a significant IVE twist. By using this technique on two tracks, it shows that when used correctly, sampling can make songs more powerful: a rejuvenation of the old with a dynamic punch from the modern.

Along with "You Wanna Cry," "Thank U" is another beautiful ballad showcasing the vocals of the IVE members. It has a calming aura, and listening to it feels like being wrapped in a warm hug on a cold night.

The rest of the album demonstrates the diversity of IVE. "FLU" has a lighter feel, and while it's not high-tempo, it is an easy listen that has a punch to it. The voices of all the members blend to make the perfect B-Side track: something less suited for a title track but able to exhibit the group's talent to those who dive into the whole album. "TKO" also shows another side to IVE. It's a track with more R&B elements, focusing on rapping from the very start, with Yujin and Rei showcasing their skills. It also has powerful vocals to add different layers and make it more interesting to listen to.

IVE’s sweet and simple choreography proves you don’t need to be packing punches or backflipping around to have the most fun routine. The moves create a sense of elegance and fluidity, while also being fun and easy for anyone to dance along to. Also, while some groups might focus on powerful performances while sacrificing vocal stability, IVE have got their priorities straight. The new ballads within their discography show that they have evolved: becoming not only well-rounded idols but competent and talented vocalists.

IVE continues to break boundaries by trying something new with every release. While every song still has the essential "IVE" sound, the use of samples, different music techniques, and showcasing the strengths of each of the members, cements the group's evolution.
